The “Stefanos Melodon”
Byzantine Choir was established in March 2012 at Chania Crete by the
conductor Mr. Constantinos Stefanakis, choirmaster of the Metropolitan
Church of the Holy Nativity of the Theotokos, Chania and teacher of
Byzantine music at the General ecclesiastical Lyceum of Chania, as well
at the Byzantine music school of the Holy Metropolis Kydonias and
Apokoronou. The female part of “Stefanos Melodon” Byzantine Choir was
established in October 2013.
The name “Stefanos Melodon” was inspired by the wreath which implies a circle of people who simultaneously are chanters, in other words they chant Byzantine hymns. The name “Stefanos Melodon” was proposed by our colleague chanter and member of the choir, Mr. Vassilis Maropaki, lawyer-theologist.
The main purpose of our choir is to spread the art of Byzantine ecclesiastic music and that of traditional music from all parts of Greece.
